Tips and Equipment for Planting Roses in Autumn

23.05.25

5 Steps to beautiful roses in your garden:

1. Choose the perfect rose and location

Choose a stem rose, climbing rose, or shrub rose that is cultivated in a pot or bare-root. Because bare-root roses are cultivated in the ground, they are less expensive to purchase. If you wish to grow an entire bed of roses, this will come in helpful. After that, find the ideal spot for your flowers. Roses want a bright, but not too dry location. Make sure it has adequate space to expand.

Tip: Make sure the rose is planted in another area then where another rose has already bloomed. This eliminates sickness and food scarcity.

A rose may be transplanted in both fall and winter as long as there is no frost on the ground. Check that the depth of the rose in the new position is the same as it was in the old one.

2. Make a large hole
Bare-root roses should be planted as soon as possible after purchase to prevent the roots from drying out and allowing them to develop fully. So dig a hole at least 50 by 50 centimetres in size (about twice as deep and wide as the root ball).

3. Plant the rose and cover with rose soil

Plant the rose three to five centimetres below ground level, with the thickening over the roots. This prevents freezing. Mix the excavated soil with soil improver for roses (rose potting soil) and a handful of cow manure. Fill the hole with the rose in it with rose soil.

4. Press the soil and water the rose

Immediately after pressing the soil, give the rose lots of water, especially in the first few weeks. The roots will be able to 'take root' as a result of this.

5. Enjoy a garden full of beautiful roses in summer

Because the roses have plenty of time to grow a root system during the winter, they are able to absorb adequate nutrients and sprout in March/April. They won't dry out as rapidly this way, and they won't become stressed when the first warm, sunny days arrive.

This makes working with roses a lot easier

Make sure your customer is well prepared to work and grow roses this autumn. Pruning shears, shovels, garden gloves, and watering cans can be added to your rose collection quickly.

Protection and preparation

It's a good idea to remove the flower heads or trim back roses before planting them in the fall. Pruning shears and pruning gloves come in handy for this. These gloves are a little longer so you can confidently maneuver around the rose's thorns.

Digging and planting

The plant shovel and rake are made of a strong material that will last for a long period. They can be used for a variety of tasks in the garden, but they're especially useful for planting and transplanting. They're also easy to store because of the handy hole in the handle.

A thin flexible (and water-resistant) garden glove is great for planting without getting your hands filthy. Gloves ensure you have dry, clean hands and adequate grip.

Plant maintenance

Watering is especially important for newly planted plants. Especially in dry conditions and when the root structure isn't fully developed. This is also relevant if you planted them right before winter. Watering roses (shrubs) less regularly but in larger amounts is preferable. It is critical that the water is distributed evenly and does not pool on the plants. It's only logical to use a large watering can with a spray head here. In this way the dirt will not crumble and the roots will not be exposed.
